Have you ever found yourself navigating a season of change with your team? It can feel like walking through quicksand, especially if there’s resistance or conflict. Change is hard—it’s uncomfortable, and it makes people feel vulnerable. And when people don’t feel important, understood, appreciated, or valued, that discomfort can quickly turn into pushback.
As leaders, it’s our responsibility to guide our teams through these moments with care. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that how we lead through change matters more than the change itself. When people feel heard, seen, and valued, even the toughest transitions become manageable.
So, let me ask you this: Have you paused to evaluate your role in the process?
Here are a few questions I always ask myself when I’m leading through change:
1️⃣ Does everyone clearly understand the "why" behind the change?
If people don’t know the purpose behind what’s happening, it’s hard for them to rally behind it. Clarity creates buy-in.
2️⃣ Have I truly listened to everyone's questions and concerns?
It’s not enough to announce change and move forward. Take time to sit with your team, listen to their feedback, and make sure they feel understood.
3️⃣ Have I communicated how important my team is in implementing the change?
People want to know their work matters. Show them how their roles are critical to making this shift successful.
4️⃣ Have I shared how they benefit from the change?
Let’s be real—everyone wants to know, “What’s in it for me?” If you can show your team how the change positively impacts them, they’re much more likely to embrace it.
5️⃣ Am I intentionally recognizing and affirming my team as we navigate this transition?
A little appreciation goes a long way. Celebrate the small wins and remind your team how much you value their efforts.
Here’s the thing: It’s easy to point fingers or look outside ourselves for answers when things feel messy. But real leadership begins when we look inward. Are we showing up in the way our team needs us to? Are we creating space for connection, communication, and appreciation?
The truth is, your power lies in self-reflection. When you lead from a place of authenticity and care, your team will feel it. They’ll trust you. And together, you’ll come out stronger on the other side of any challenge.
Change might be hard, but you’ve got this—and so does your team.
