Why She Didn’t Hear You (Even Though You Were Crystal Clear)

July 17, 20253 min read

Ever leave a conversation thinking, “Wait… what just happened?”

You were confident. Clear. You thought you nailed it. But somehow, it didn’t land. They misunderstood you, or worse — walked away with the wrong impression entirely.

This happens all. the. time.

I see it in the women I coach — smart, capable leaders with hearts in the right place — whose communication keeps getting misread. And it’s costing them. Confidence. Connection. Influence.

So let’s talk about why. And how to fix it.

Let’s Start With DISC — Not Just a Buzzword

DISC is one of my favorite tools for building better communication — in business, at home, with your team, your clients, your partner… all of it.

It’s not a deep dive into your childhood wounds or your five-year vision board. It’s a mirror that shows you how you naturally show up — and how other people experience you.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • D = Dominance
Fast, direct, results-first. Think: “Let’s go.”

  • I = Influence
Energetic, people-loving, expressive. Think: “Let’s make it fun.”

  • S = Steadiness
Supportive, calm, patient. Think: “Let’s take our time and do this right.”

  • C = Conscientiousness
Detail-focused, precise, analytical. Think: “Let’s make sure it’s done well.”

You’re probably a mix. And you’re not stuck in one lane forever — your style can shift with life, leadership, and growth.

Why This Actually Matters (Like, in Real Life)

Whether you’re…

  • Signing a new client

  • Leading a team meeting

  • Speaking on stage

  • Negotiating with a toddler at bedtime

Your words only matter if they land.

And here’s the thing: what feels clear and confident to YOU might come off as abrupt, overwhelming, or vague to someone else.

True story: I’m a high D (hello, New Jersey roots), and when I first moved to Colorado, people thought I was aggressive. I wasn’t. I was just being me — but I wasn’t adapting. I was leading with intensity, not intentionality.

The Shift: Be a Chameleon — With Heart

Someone once told me: “If you want to be good with people, be a chameleon.”

That’s not about being fake. It’s about being flexible. A chameleon doesn’t change its truth — it shifts to meet the moment.

The most powerful communicators don’t bulldoze through every interaction. They slow down. They pay attention. They meet people where they are.

That’s how trust is built. That’s how leaders stand out.

Want to Communicate Like a Leader? Start Here:

  • Take the DISC assessment. (DM me “DISC” and I’ll send you my go-to free one.)

  • Get to know your default style. What are your superpowers — and what could trip you up?

  • Start spotting styles in others. Are they high energy or more reserved? People-focused or detail-driven?

  • Adjust your approach. It’s not about changing who you are — it’s about communicating on purpose.

This Is What Makes You Magnetic

Most people don’t take the time to learn this stuff — and it shows.
But you? You’re different. You’re building the version of you who knows how to connect deeply, lead boldly, and speak in a way that actually gets heard.

And I want to help you do it.

This month inside the Hey Girl, You Can membership, you're getting a full class on DISC and communication. You’ll walk away with clarity on your style and a practical game plan for how to connect with every other type around you — in business, leadership, and life.
